Durian Durian (comic to go with a film synopsis I did for uni)

CONTENT: Uni stuff, comic short

WARNING: Mature content. Mild sexual themes for one part.

The everyday life of Yan, a prostitute working in Hong Kong from Shenzhen, China. She is neighbours with a young girl named Fan who lives illegally with her family in an alley near Yan’s small apartment.

Kinda frustrated that this reads right to left at times, but a due date’s a due date… Haha.

That aside, I think Durian Durian was a charming film, though. On first watch it kinda drags a bit, but on rewatch you start to understand its depth. It’s filmed a bit more like a documentary, actually. Definitely not like one of those Hollywood-esque films. I like it, still.

SYNOPSIS THAT THIS IS PAIRED WITH:
Durian Durian begins with a young girl named Fan and her family living in an alleyway in Hong Kong. She’s a bit poor in the area, but she seems happy. We soon are introduced to Yan, her neighbour. Yan is a prostitute from China and needs to earn as much money as she can with the time she has left to stay. Despite her walking past Fan’s place all the time, the two don’t actually meet until after Yan’s pimp gets assaulted by someone with a durian. Their friendship grows a little more when Yan helps Fan wash the dishes at a nearby restaurant. We learn that the two have things in common: they both held a three-month travel visa, came originally from Shenzhen, and were both due to leave Hong Kong in three months. However, Fan and her family were willing to stay illegally. After Yan leaves Hong Kong to China, she meets back with family, old friends and other relationships, and contemplates her future. Yan eventually receives a mail package from Fan containing a durian fruit and a letter. In the letter, Fan talks about the durian, who assaulted Yan’s pimp, and how her life is going. In the end, Yan eats the durian with her friends.
